Over the past handful of years, I have grown more and more excited in the early spring to gather young nettle shoots, to feed, fortify and prick me back to waking life. Thank you for sharing about your favorite nettle patch, I have several: in the hilltowns of Western, MA, one near my parent's home on the banks of the Delaware River in New Jersey and the ever abundant nettles of ancient Avalon in England and Wales drinking up the old salt water seas turned land.
mmmmm, pricking us back to waking life indeed. i love the idea of all of us sharing our stories based on our favorite harvesting patches, what a way to introduce ourselves...thank you levi:)
Hi Frieda! I’m so glad to see you here on Substack. A brief notice flashed across my screen with the word nettles in it. I just took my first nettles harvest of this year, which is always a cause for celebration.
I took one of your online classes during the pandemic, before you moved east. I want to take more, as it was truly helpful. I have moved since then too, from North Florida to the North Woods of Wisconsin. In fact I’m still moving. When I left there last October, the infrastructure for reliable internet service was just being installed in my neighborhood. When I return in a couple weeks, I’ll be able to access another class of yours hopefully.
I started reading your post before I looked at your name. But I didn’t get far into it before I recognized your beautiful writing. Thank you for this post. I too have a favorite Linden tree up north where I will harvest sweet-smelling flowers in a few months.
linda,
so sweet to reconnect with you and hear of your own shifting of landscapes! with linden tree roots reaching....:)
Nettles are my every single day morning drink... thank you for this thoughtful homage, Frieda. x
